Recycled Plastics in Automotive Industry: A Step Toward the Future

Plastics are widely used in modern vehicles — across dashboards, door panels, bumpers, electrical housings, and underbody components. Their role in reducing weight and improving efficiency is well recognised. However, the use of recycled plastics in the automotive sector remains limited.

Why Switch to Recycled Plastics

Recycled plastics offer a practical way for OEMs to reduce reliance on virgin materials and lower their carbon footprint. This shift helps OEMs align with emerging requirements such as:

  • Sustainability commitments, including ESG and decarbonisation targets
  • Global supply chain expectations, influenced by EU and other international markets
  • **Future regulatory readiness — **while current frameworks such as EPR and end-of-life vehicle regulations do not mandate recycled content in the automotive sector, they clearly signal future requirements

Current Status: Use of Recycled Plastics

Across the Indian automotive industry, the use of recycled plastics is increasing, but adoption remains gradual and uneven across OEMs, components, and vehicle segments.

The common applications where recycled plastics are currently used are presented below.

These applications are typically lower-risk and more tolerant to material variability, making them natural entry points. However, significant potential exists to expand the use of recycled plastics beyond current applications.

Technically feasible applications are outlined below.

These applications are technically viable and are already being explored by some OEMs, but are not yet widely adopted across the industry.

Opportunities: What OEMs Should Do

Scaling the use of recycled plastics requires changes in how components are designed, sourced, and tested.

  • Start with defined parts: Identify a few non-critical, high-volume components and set recycled content targets
  • Update design and specifications: Allow recycled or blended materials and relax non-critical tolerances where feasible
  • Align suppliers early: Include recycled options in RFQs and co-develop materials with Tier-1 suppliers
  • Run trials and validate: Test recyclates in existing tooling and build internal validation data

Recycled plastics are no longer just a sustainability initiative but a necessary step toward responsible and future-ready manufacturing.
