Overview. For GIZ, Social Lab assessed the value chain of single-use plastics (SUPs) and their alternatives across two cities in Maharashtra and two in Tamil Nadu — covering manufacturing emissions, facility data and challenges.
The challenge
To inform policy and alternatives, GIZ needed a structured assessment of the single-use plastics value chain and the viability of alternatives across distinct Indian urban contexts.

Scoping objectives, study boundary and methodology across four cities in two states.
Assessment of single-use plastic manufacturing — emissions data, facility data and operational challenges.
Parallel assessment of SUP-alternative manufacturing — emissions and facility data — to compare the value chains.
